Hammam & Spa in Marrakech: What to Expect

Tours From Fes

A visit to the hammam is one of Morocco’s oldest and most restorative rituals — part deep-clean, part social tradition, part pure relaxation. If you have never been to one, Marrakech is a wonderful place for your first experience, from steamy neighbourhood baths to serene spa-riads. Here’s what to expect and how to choose.

What is a hammam?

A hammam is a traditional steam bath, historically found beside the mosque in every Moroccan neighbourhood. It is where people go to cleanse, unwind and catch up with friends. The heat opens your pores, the steam softens the skin, and a thorough scrub leaves you feeling remarkably renewed. It has been part of daily life here for centuries.

The ritual, step by step

  1. Warm up in a heated, steamy room until your skin softens.
  2. Black soap (savon beldi), made from olives, is massaged over the body and left to work.
  3. The scrub — an attendant exfoliates you with a coarse kessa glove. (Prepare to be amazed by what comes off.)
  4. Rhassoul clay, a mineral-rich Moroccan clay, may be applied as a mask.
  5. Rinse and finish with a wash and, often, a massage with nourishing argan oil.

Public vs. private hammams

There are two very different experiences:

  • Neighbourhood (public) hammams are inexpensive, authentic and local. You bring your own kit (or buy it at the door), it’s single-sex, and it’s a real slice of daily life. Bring flip-flops, a towel and swimwear for the lower half.
  • Spa & riad hammams are geared to visitors — private or semi-private rooms, English-speaking staff, robes and towels provided, and add-on treatments like massages and facials. More expensive, but effortless and blissful.

What to bring: For a public hammam: swimwear (bottoms), flip-flops, a towel, a change of clothes, and a little cash. For a spa hammam, just yourself — everything is provided.

Tips for your first time

  • Stay hydrated before and after — it’s hot in there.
  • Go gentle on the sun the same day; freshly exfoliated skin is sensitive.
  • It’s normal to be scrubbed vigorously — say so if you’d like it softer.
  • Allow time to cool down and relax afterwards with a glass of mint tea.

A hammam is the perfect bookend to a desert tour — nothing soothes road-weary muscles better. We’re happy to recommend and arrange a hammam or spa in Marrakech as part of your trip.
