Marrakech rewards both the wanderer and the planner. Beyond the famous square lies a city of hidden palaces, tranquil gardens, rooftop dinners and craft-filled souks — plus some of Morocco’s best day trips right on its doorstep. Here are the experiences we’d send any first-timer to, and a few our returning guests love.
The essentials inside the medina
- Jemaa el-Fnaa — the legendary square, best at dusk as food stalls, musicians and storytellers take over. Watch the spectacle from a rooftop cafe, then dive in.
- The souks — a labyrinth of lanes selling lanterns, leather, rugs, spices and slippers. Getting a little lost is part of the fun.
- Bahia Palace — a 19th-century masterpiece of carved cedar, zellij tilework and peaceful courtyards.
- Ben Youssef Madrasa — a stunning former Quranic school, one of the most beautiful buildings in the country.
- Saadian Tombs & Koutoubia — royal tombs hidden for centuries, and the mosque whose minaret defines the skyline (courtyard/exterior for non-Muslims).
Gardens & calm
When the medina buzz gets much, escape to the Jardin Majorelle and the adjoining Yves Saint Laurent museum, the serene Le Jardin Secret in the old town, or the olive groves and reflecting pool of the Menara Gardens. All are welcome antidotes to the crowds.
Eat, drink & unwind
- Rooftop dining — sunset with a view over the medina and the Atlas beyond.
- A cooking class — shop the market, then make your own tagine.

- Mint tea anywhere, anytime — it’s the local ritual.
Timing tip: Explore the medina and gardens in the cooler morning, retreat to a pool or a shady cafe at midday, and save the great square for the evening when it truly comes alive.
