North or south? Coast or desert? Morocco is bigger and more varied than most people realise, and the “right” region depends entirely on what you love. Here’s a plain-English guide to the country’s main areas — and who each one suits — so you can shape a trip that fits you.
The imperial cities — for history & culture
Marrakech, Fes, Meknes and Rabat are the historic capitals, each layered with palaces, medinas and craft traditions. Choose Marrakech for energy and easy access to the desert and mountains; Fes for the most atmospheric medieval medina; Rabat for a calmer, coastal capital. Most trips start in one of these.
The Sahara — for the once-in-a-lifetime night
The great dunes lie in the south-east. Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) is the classic choice — tall, cinematic dunes reached from Marrakech or Fes, with camel treks and desert camps. Zagora and the Draa Valley are closer to Marrakech (good if you’re short on time), while Erg Chigaga is wilder and more remote. If you only do one thing in Morocco, make it a desert night.
The Atlas Mountains — for scenery & Berber villages
The High Atlas rises just south of Marrakech: terraced valleys, walnut groves, mule tracks and Mount Toubkal. Great for day trips (Ourika, Imlil) or multi-day walking. The Middle Atlas around Ifrane and Azrou brings cedar forests and Barbary macaques.
The Atlantic coast — for sea air & slowing down
Essaouira is the star — a walled, windswept port town of blue boats, seafood and artists. Further south, Agadir offers resort beaches, and Taghazout is Morocco’s surf capital. Perfect for tacking a relaxed few days onto a busier itinerary.
The North — for something different
The Rif and northern coast feel distinct from the rest of the country. Chefchaouen, the blue mountain town, is the highlight; Tangier is a fascinating, fast-changing gateway; and the Roman ruins of Volubilis near Meknes are among the finest in Africa.
Valleys & gorges — the road between
Between the mountains and the desert lie the Dades and Todra gorges, the kasbah-lined Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Valley of Roses and Ait Ben Haddou. You’ll pass through these on the way to the Sahara — and they’re a highlight in their own right.
